Speaking Strategies for English Learners

Many English students complain that they understand English, but dont feel confident enough to join a conversation. There are a number of reasons for this, which we include here along with possible solutions: Students try to translate from their native language into English. How to Fix  It? Identify the Little Man/Woman in Your Head  Ã¢â‚¬â€Ã‚  If you pay attention, youll notice that youve created a little person in your head that translates. By insisting on always translating through this little man or woman, youre introducing a third person into the conversation. Learn to identify this person and ask them nicely to be quiet! Production blocking occurs due to nervousness, lack of confidence, etc. How to Fix  It? Become a Child Again —  Think back to when you were a child learning your first language. Did you make mistakes? Did you understand everything? Allow yourself to be a child again and make as many mistakes as possible. Also accept the fact that you wont understand everything, thats okay! The speaker is looking for a specific word, rather than using simple language to describe what is meant. How to Fix  It? Dont Always Tell the Truth  Ã¢â‚¬â€ Students sometimes limit themselves by trying to find the exact translation of something theyve done. However, if you are learning English, its not necessary to always tell the truth. If you are practicing telling stories in the past, make up a story. Youll find you can speak more easily if you arent trying to find a specific word. There arent enough conversation opportunities in or outside of class. How to Fix  It? Use Your Native Language  Ã¢â‚¬â€ Think about what you like to discuss in your own native language. Find a friend who speaks your language, have a conversation about a topic you both enjoy in your own language. Next, try to reproduce the conversation in English. Dont worry if you cant say everything, just try to repeat the main ideas of your conversation. Students arent able to speak to peers (for example: mixed classes of adults and teenagers). How to Fix  It? Make Speaking Into a Game —  Challenge each other to speak in English for a short period of time. Keep your goals easy. Perhaps you can begin with a short two-minute conversation in English. As practicing becomes more natural, challenge each other for longer periods of time. Another possibility is to collect some money for each time you use your own language with a friend. Use the money to go out for a drink and practice some more English! Exam preparation focuses on grammar, vocabulary, etc. and leaves little time for active use. How to Fix  It? Create a Study Group  Ã¢â‚¬â€ If getting ready for a test is your primary goal for learning English, put together a study group to review and prepare — in English! Make sure your group only discusses in English. Studying and reviewing in English, even if its just grammar, will help you become more comfortable in speaking English.   Speaking Resources Here are a number of resources, lesson plans, suggestion pages, and more which will help you and your students improve English speaking skills in and outside of class. Book Review: Why Read Marx Today? (Jonathan Wolff; Oxford University Press; 2002) In this book, Wolff (UCL professor, philosopher, and columnist for the Guardian) tackles the immense task of analysing the validity and modern significance of Karl Marx and his teachings. As Wolff quickly points out in his introductory paragraphs, surely the fall of the Berlin Wall - along with the collapse of the so-called â€Å"‘Evil Empire’† (1) (the Soviet Union) - should have rendered the Marxist theorists beaten and humiliated, their ideologies proven wrong and obsolete. Yet, despite this, Wolff emphasises that Marx’s criticisms of late nineteenth-century economics and society still â€Å"have enormous relevance even in the twenty-first century† (3). Regardless of what his character may have been like, Marx is the thinker at the very forefront of the critique of capitalism. When you look at the populations, even in small towns you see multiple different races and cultures. This then leads to our workforce where you see that same type of diverse culture entering the workforce in the communities they live in and the ones around them. Demographic Changes One of the larger changes in our workforce is that the employee population is becoming more and more diverse. The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics states that the workforce in 2014 was made up primarily by Caucasians coming in at 79%. African Americans, Asians, American Indians, Alaska Natives, and race list as â€Å"other† made up the additional working population (BLS Reports, 2014). Although when looking these different races individually you wouldn’t think that they are a large part of the population. But when you are talking about 21% of our workforce, that is a large number. Looking at the number of people by race actually work is also very interesting. Native Hawaiian 70%, Pacific Islanders 66%, Hispanics/Latinos, Asians 64.6%, Caucasians 63.5% , 63.3% of people descending from two or more races, African Americans 61.2%, and American Indian and Alaska Natives 59.6% (BLS Reports, 2014). Over the last three years our school as went from being a primarily caucasian school to a school with a diverse population. I believe this has made our school strong and offered more of an opportunity for the students and staff to emerge and understand the diverse culture we have all around us. Net Present Value NPV of an investment proposal is calculated by discounting the cash inflows back to the present at the required rate of return and there from subtracting the initial outlay. In other words, NPV is measured as difference between the present value of cash inflows and cash outflows. If the NPV is greater than zero then the project is accepted and if it is less than zero then the project is rejected. NPV having positive value increases the value of firm and which in turn increases the wealth of the investors. It is expressed in absolute terms. NPV method helps in decision making. A variation in the cash flow timing does not affect the NPV calculation and decision thereon taken by the investors. Internal Rate of Return Internal Rate of return is the rate at which an investment is repaid by the proceeds from the project. Mathematically, it is regarded as the rate of return at which the present value of cash inflows equals the present value of cash outflows. The IRR so calculated is compared with the required rate of return. The required rate of return is the minimum rate at which investor expects the firm will earn profit. If IRR is less than the required rate of return then the project is rejected otherwise accepted. Therefore, accepting the project with higher IRR will increase the wealth of the investors. It is expressed in percentage terms and does not help in decision making. A variation in the timing of cash outflow results in the various values of IRR which in turn makes difficult for decision making. Comparing NPV and IRR IRR May not be consistent to the Shareholders wealth maximization when compared to NPV Both the methods are consistent with the objective of maximizing shareholders wealth. But two are not in correspondence with one another. 1. Mutually Exclusive Projects If there are two independent projects, then the IRR and NPV will provide the same ranking and result and will increase the wealth of the shareholders. But in case of mutually exclusive projects, both the methods provide different rankings and IRR may not provide the ranking which may increase the wealth of the shareholders. 2. Multiple Rates of Return The IRR method is affected by one major discrepancy that the method sometimes gives multiple rates of return for different projects. It happens when there is frequent increase or decrease in the cash inflows or sudden infusion of capital into the project. 3. Issue of Assumption of Reinvestment Rate - NPV assumes that the cash flows generated by the given project are reinvested at the cost of capital and IRR assumes that the cash flows generated are reinvested at the IRR. Thus, IRR assumption is based on the contingency of cash inflows and outflows of the given projects. As far as the rate of return is considered as the opportunity rate, the NPV method is more accurate though conservative but applies consistently to all projects.
